On December 7-8, AirUCI will host a visit from Prof. Lidia Morawska, Distinguished Professor and Australian Laureate Fellow in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia.  She is noted as the scientist who shared her research findings with WHO and government health agencies worldwide that the COVID virus was transmitted through breathing.  Prof. Morawska will present a lecture entitled "Air Quality and Public Health: how to “close this discussion” to be held at 3:30 in Natural Sciences building 2 in room...

On November 30th, AirUCI's Internal Seminar will hold a meeting in Rowland Hall room 390 from 12:30 to 2:00 with lunch provided.  Speakers and topics are: Hui Wang (Guenther Group) "Biogenic Isoprene Emission in the Arctic" - Jennifer Campos Ayala (Saltzman Group) "Inferred Biomass Burning Reconstruction over the last 22,000 years" - Sukriti Kapur (Shiraiwa Group) "Reactive Oxygen Species and Oxidative Potential of Particulate Matter in Wintertime Fairbanks during ALPACA 2022 Campaign".

AirUCI's student chapter of the AAAR will hold a seminar on November 16th from 12-2 pm in Rowland Hall room 390.  Speaker and talk title TBD.

AirUCI's student chapter of the AAAR is hosting a Halloween social on October 30th from 4-7 pm in Rowland Hall room 390.

Event Date: Fri, 10/27/2023

This will be a wrap-up meeting of the DOJ group to be held October 27, 2023 at the Beckman Center.  We will review progress made so far by each team and the research group as a whole.  New funding options will be explored.  Specific tasks and timelines will be updated, the budget will be reviewed, and community meetings will be planned.  Invitations will be sent in early October.

On October 13th, AirUCI faculty Manabu Shiraiwa will host a visit by a delegation from the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association.  They will meet with additional AirUCI faculty to exchange information on traffic emissions and air quality research.  The visitors are Dr. Keiko Shibata (JAMA, Isuzu); Mr. Takuya Ikeda (JAMA, Nissan); Mr. Naoki Konishsi (JAMA, Isuzu); and Dr. Tsuyoshi Ito (Japan Automobile Research Institute; JARI).

UCI's Department of Earth System Science will host a lecture by AirUCI alumnus Dr. Mike Lawler (Smith group) now at NOAA's Chemical Science Laboratory.  The talk is entitled "Sea spray organics: how much and how important?" and will be held on October 4th at 3:30 in Croul Hall room 3101.

AirUCI faculty Annmarie Carlton and Simon Rosanka will be hosting a talk by their collaborator from Germany, Anne Caroline Lange on September 29th from 12:30 - 2:30 in Rowland Hall room 390.  The title of her talk is "Air quality analysis and emission optimization for Europe using inverse modelling".

Beginning in September, AirUCI researchers are volunteering to assist with science events for the Irvine Unified School District in the 2023-2024 school year.  For example, AirUCI grad student Jackson Ryan (Carlton group) has already signed up to assist with multiple events, which include:

  • "Ask a Scientist" night on September 13th
  • Science Fair Project Mentoring, held September through December
  • 21st Century Career Conference on December 14th
  • 41st annual IUSD Science Fair on December 11-15
