News
Here's the latest news from AirUCI — our events, our people, our science.
2011
AirUCI's Scott Samuelsen and Jack Brouwer, director and associate director of UC Irvine’s National Fuel Cell Research Center, have developed an exciting and unique fuel cell generator in conjunction with the NFCRC staff and the Orange County Sanitation District in Fountain Valley, California. Other private sector collaborators on the project were FuelCell Energy, Inc. and Air Products.
The apparatus simultaneously and continuously converts gases that are created in wastewater digesters into hydrogen, which is then used for zero-emission vehicle fuel, electricity, and heat. This is an important breakthrough in clean energy technology that promises to lead to cleaner air and less reliance on fossil fuels. Congratulations, Scott and Jack!
On July 15, 2011, UCI Interim Vice Chancellor for Advancement Dan Aldrich and former California First Lady Gayle Wilson toured the AirUCI labs and heard presentations on our research projects. Shown here are Dr. Aldrich and Mrs. Wilson (2nd and 3rd from right) with AirUCI researchers Mike Ezell, Teri Longin, Veronique Perraud, and Lisa Wingen.
At the 71st Physical Electronics Conference in June, 2011, AirUCI's Tanza Lewis won the highly competitive 2011 Nottingham Prize for the best paper based on a PhD thesis. Congratulations, Tanza!
Congratulations to AirUCI Project Scientist Veronique Perraud, who was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the American Chemical Society! The certificate was in recognition of her poster that she presented at the March 2011 ACS meeting in Anaheim, California. Well done, Vero!!

On Wednesday, May 11, 2011, AirUCI PI Donald Dabdub represented UCI and our AirUCI group at the Coalition for NSF meetings with legislators and their staff in Washington DC. This meeting gave lawmakers a chance to see first-hand the kinds of things we’re doing. Our group has been singled out as representing the best in research and outreach to the public, so it’s really exciting to have Prof. Dabdub as the face of our team at this event.
"Water is going to be the oil of the 21st century," predicts AirUCI PI Bill Cooper, director of the Urban Water Research Center, in a USA Today article on water scarcity and potential solutions to this growing problem.
