2012
On October 17, 2012, AirUCI will host Orange County Girl Scout Troop 873 as they "follow their journey" to learn about and use resources wisely. They will tour our labs and hear about issues relating to air quality, pollution, and careers in science.
AirUCI researchers participated in Irvine Unified School District's annual Ask-A-Scientist Night on October 17, 2012. More than 400 people attended, and students had the opportunity to ask questions about science and receive answers from our group and others at the event. Our Veronique Perraud, Carla Kidd, Crissy Anderson, Matt Dawson, and Kathryn Perrine represented AirUCI.
AirUCI's Matt Dawson has been named as one of this year's recipients of the prestigious ARCS Scholar Awards, which recognize UC Irvine's most academically superior doctoral students exhibiting outstanding promise as scientists, researchers, and public leaders. Way to go, Matt!
Dr. Zeev Rosenzweig, Program Director for the Analytical and Surface Chemistry Division of the National Science Foundation, will visit AirUCI on September 12, 2012 to hear updates on our current research projects and to tour our labs.
AirUCI PI Donald Blake will receive the 2013 National Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology from the American Chemical Society, to be presented next spring at the 2013 ACS meeting in New Orleans. Congratulations, Don!
AirUCI Director Barbara Finlayson-Pitts was asked to write an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences "Retrospective" after the March, 2012 passing of F. Sherwood Rowland, known to us as Sherry. His discovery with Mario Molina and Paul Crutzen of the "ozone hole" over Antarctica earned them the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Rowland was an inspiration to all of us in AirUCI and he is greatly missed.
AirUCI undergraduate researcher Geovani Montoya will be participating in the first annual UC Irvine Undergraduate Chemistry Symposium on August 1, 2012. He, along with his co-researchers, will present a poster entitled, "Application of Aerosol Mass Spectrometry to Animal Exposure Studies."
Robert Phalen, AirUCI ORU faculty member, has been elected President of the Board of Directors of the California Society for Biomedical Research. Many congratulations!
According to an analysis by Times Higher Education, UC Irvine was ranked first in the U.S. and fourth in the world among the 100 best universities that have been established less than 50 years! We in AirUCI are delighted at this great honor and strive to do our part to help UCI earn rankings such as these!
