AirUCI Director Barbara Finlayson-Pitts was asked to write an article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences "Retrospective" after the March, 2012 passing of F. Sherwood Rowland, known to us as Sherry. His discovery with Mario Molina and Paul Crutzen of the "ozone hole" over Antarctica earned them the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Prof. Rowland was an inspiration to all of us in AirUCI and he is greatly missed.

Here's the latest news from AirUCI — our events, our people, our science.
2012
AirUCI undergraduate researcher Geovani Montoya will be participating in the first annual UC Irvine Undergraduate Chemistry Symposium on August 1, 2012. He, along with his co-researchers, will present a poster entitled, "Application of Aerosol Mass Spectrometry to Animal Exposure Studies."
Robert Phalen, AirUCI ORU faculty member, has been elected President of the Board of Directors of the California Society for Biomedical Research. Many congratulations!
According to an analysis by Times Higher Education, UC Irvine was ranked first in the U.S. and fourth in the world among the 100 best universities that have been established less than 50 years! We in AirUCI are delighted at this great honor and strive to do our part to help UCI earn rankings such as these!
AirUCI PI Don Blake has been named a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry by the UCI Department of Chemistry! Congratulations, Don!
AirUCI PI Doug Tobias was elected a Fellow of the American Chemical Society in July, 2013. This is a prestigious honor bestowed upon 96 distinguished scientists who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments and contributions to ACS. He joins AirUCI co-Director John Hemminger, also an ACS Fellow. Way to go, Doug!
AirUCI PI Sergey Nizkorodov, along with our PNNL collaborators Alex Laskin and Julia Laskin, wrote a featured article in the scientific journal Environmental Chemistry entitled "Mass spectrometric approaches for chemical characterization of atmospheric aerosols: critical review of most recent advances".
Mass spectrometry of atmospheric aerosols is a booming subject, with some 200-300 papers published in this area every year, and this article is a review of much of the research being done. In addition, several recent AirUCI researchers are noted in the article: Emily Bruns' ASAP method, Aline Gratien's surprising observation of making aromatic molecules in oxidation of alpha-pinene, and multiple papers by Tran Nguyen on analysis of isoprene SOA and limonene SOA and by Adam Bateman on limonene SOA. We're proud of AirUCI's contributions to this exciting field! Read the article
In the June 2012 issue of the newsletter for the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemistry, AirUCI is highlighted in an article that describes our 2012 International Science Workshop! Read the article — go to page 8.
AirUCI team members were honored with prestigious awards at the annual E.K.C. Lee Dinner held on campus May 31, 2012. AirUCI's Amanda MacMillan received the Michael Gebel Award and Tran Nguyen received the E.K.C. Lee Award. Both are graduate students in the Nizkorodov group. It was also announced at the dinner that AirUCI PI Sergey Nizkorodov received this year's UCI Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research. Congratulations, all!
On May 30th, 2012 AirUCI will welcome students from Godinez Fundamental High School in Santa Ana as they tour our labs and hear presentations about our research.
