AirUCI PI Ralph Delfino was quoted in an article in the Los Angeles Times on May 29, 2014 as a main reviewer of a new study showing the extent of pollution generated at Los Angeles International Airport. The research, believed to be the most comprehensive of its type, found that takeoffs and landings at LAX are a major source of ultrafine particles that are being emitted over a larger area than previously thought. 2014
Five AirUCI researchers were honored with awards at the annual Lee Dinner on May 29, 2014, hosted by the Department of Chemistry. Matt Dawson of the Finlayson-Pitts research group received the Lee Award, while Kristine Arquero in the F-P group and Sandra Blair of the Nizkorodov group were presented with two of the three Gebel Awards for graduate students along with Lindsay Reinstatler (of the Heyduk group in the Chemistry department). The Gebel Award for undergraduate students was presented to Nujhat Ali and Mariyah Saiduddin of AirUCI's Nizkorodov group.
AirUCI Project Coordinator Melissa Sweet received the Chemistry staff award along with AirUCI collaborator John Greaves and Tenley Dunn (of the Chemistry department). Congratulations to all!
Three members of AirUCI's research team were contributors to the influential 2014 report issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. AirUCI PIs Michael Prather and Donald Blake, along with Prather group postdoc Christopher Holmes, are listed among the IPCC report's contributors. Government leaders and policymakers around the world refer to this report as they determine how best to cope with the effects of climate change and reduce the amount of carbon that is added to the atmosphere.
AirUCI Director Barbara Finlayson-Pitts will address the "Dinner with a Scientist" event hosted by the ARCS Foundation, Orange County Chapter, on April 23, 2014. The title of her talk is "Enjoying Air We Can't Chew."
Twenty Girl Scouts from a local Mission Viejo troop will tour the AirUCI labs and see demonstrations of scientific principals on March 26, 2014. Project Scientists Lisa Wingen and Theresa McIntire will host the tour and discuss studies and career options in science for women and girls with the troop.
AirUCI will host a visit from students at Alliance Collins Family College-Ready High School in Huntington Park on March 25, 2014. They will hear a presentation on our research and will tour our labs.
AirUCI graduate students Kristine Arquero (Finlayson-Pitts group) and Paige Aiona (Nizkorodov group) have been awarded 2014 Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowships. Only 60 such fellowships are awarded in all areas of sciences each year, and this is the first time chemistry graduate students have received this highly prestigious fellowship. The award is given to students who "have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students." Way to go, Paige and Kristine! Details
At the 247th American Chemical Society national meeting in Dallas, Texas, AirUCI PI Benny Gerber was honored with a three-day symposium beginning March 16th entitled "A Little Insight Goes a Long Way: A Transformative Role of Theory in Spectroscopy and Chemical Dynamics." The focus of the symposium was on the theories and computational approaches connecting experimental observations to the underlying interactions between atoms and molecules developed by Prof. Gerber and his colleagues, collaborators, students, and postdocs.
Several AirUCI researchers and collaborators spoke over the three days, including Doug Tobias, Barbara Finlayson-Pitts, Sergey Nizkorodov, Mychel Varner, and Benny himself (of AirUCI) along with our collaborators Pavel Jungwirth, Martina Roeselova, and Sotiris Xantheas. View the program
AirUCI researchers Amanda MacMillan and Julie Lee will serve as judges at the Irvine High School science fair on February 26, 2014.
AirUCI researchers Dian Romonosky and Julie Lee, both of the Nizkorodov research group, will give a presentation at Buena Park Junior High School's annual Science Night. The event will be held on February 25th at 6 pm.
