AirUCI PI Sergey Nizkorodov has won the 2013 American Geophysical Union Atmospheric Sciences Ascent Award which, per their description, "aims to reward exceptional mid-career (academic, government, and private sector) scientists in the fields of the atmospheric and climate sciences ... demonstrating excellence in research and leadership in his or her field."  Way to go, Sergey!

On May 23, 2013, AirUCI will sponsor the high school awards dinner for the Orange County section of the American Chemical Society on campus, with introductory remarks by AirUCI's Barbara Finlayson-Pitts and keynote address by AirUCI researcher Matt Dawson. Scores of students are honored at this annual event, and we wish them the best as they continue their studies.

The Spring 2013 issue of Interface magazine published by Calit2 features AirUCI PIs Scott Samuelsen and Jack Brouwer in an article entitled "Miracle at the Wastewater Facility".  This article details the unique collaboration between UCI's National Fuel Cell Center, directed by Prof. Samuelsen, and the Orange County Sanitation District to generate energy from sewage.

On May 10, 2013, AirUCI Project Scientist Lisa Wingen participated in a panel discussion at Voice for Girls 2013 in Irvine, California. This event was sponsored by the Girl Scout Council of Orange County, and Lisa represented AirUCI in a discussion on supporting girls in STEM education and career opportunities.

On April 26, 2013, AirUCI will host several graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from the University of California, San Diegoas they tour our labs and hear presentations about our research projects.  They'll be shown the kinds of research being performed in AirUCI labs, using unique equipment and instrumentation such as different types of reaction chambers, our flow tube, etc.

AirUCI PI Sergey Nizkorodov, along with our PNNL collaborators Dr. Julia Laskin and Dr. Alexander Laskin, recently wrote a comprehensive review of new mass spectrometry techniques for studying complex atmospheric particle systems.  Published in the March 2013 edition of the journal International Reviews in Physical Chemistry, their invited article — featured on the journal's cover — quickly reached the International Reviews in Physical Chemistry most-read list.  Congratulations to Sergey, Julia, and Alex!  More about their article

On March 5th, 2013, Dr. Julie Lee and Dian Romonosky of AirUCI will give presentations on our research to students, staff, and parents at Buena Park Jr. High School's Science Night. This is the second year in a row that the school has invited AirUCI's participation, and it has inspired students and parents to pursue more science studies.
