An article in the Los Angeles Times cites the work of AirUCI PI Don Blake and Barbara Barletta of his research team on the topic of the BP oil spill entitled “As Everyone Looks Down at What Gulf Oil Spill Has Wrought, UC Irvine Researchers Look Up.”
News
Here's the latest news from AirUCI — our events, our people, our science.
2010
Physorg.com has published an article in the Space & Earth/Environment section entitled “Is oil spill also fouling the air?” which includes the research results from the work AirUCI PI Don Blake has done at the site.
AirUCI faculty Don Blake’s studies on the BP oil spill of 2010 were the subject of an article in the Los Angeles Times entitled “Gulf oil spill: Air pollution a new health concern.”
Two UCI Chemistry students — Megan Warner Szyndler and Tran Nguyen in AirUCI's Nizkorodov group — were presented with the fourth annual Michael E. Gebel award at the 2010 Edward K.C. Lee dinner held at the University Club on June 4, 2010. This award is presented to second year graduate students working in environmental chemistry who have had a period of work before continuing on to graduate school. Way to go, Megan and Tran!
The OC Science section of web site for the Orange County Register has published an article entitled “UCI scientists track oil spill’s air effects” which includes details of the studies on the BP oil spill and its impact on the atmosphere conducted by AirUCI PI Don Blake and Barbara Barletta of his research team.
2009
The research groups of AirUCI PIs Barbara Finlayson-Pitts and Benny Gerber had a recent paper featured as the cover article of the September 2, 2009 issue of The Journal of the American Chemical Society.
In addition, these two research groups and that of AirUCI PI Donald Dabdub, in collaboration with Dr. Mark S. Gordon of Iowa State University, had a recent paper selected as the cover article for the August 18, 2009 issue of The Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences journal. Read the accompanying commentary as well. We're very proud of you all!
The National Science Foundation's August 2009 Current online article profiled Barbara Finlayson-Pitts as one of the faces of NSF research — way to go, Barb!
AirUCI Director Barbara Finlayson-Pitts was interviewed for a July 20, 2009 article in the Orange County Register newspaper that discussed how building and road surfaces can contribute to air pollution.
Here are more recent articles referring to our research:
A July 13, 2009 article on the National Science Foundation's Discoveries web page discusses AirUCI's research into air pollution, specifically airborne particles, energy, and ozone, and interviews some of our PIs.
A June, 2009 National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop met to discuss current issues in Environmental Chemical Sciences, and AirUCI Director Barbara Finlayson-Pitts was a panelist. Their report notes the importance of understanding the atmosphere at the chemical/molecular level to make more accurate climate predictions and better environmental policy.
