News
Below is a list of past events related to AirUCI (sorted with the most recent first).
On August 16, 2011 at noon, Dr. Christopher Blaszczak-Boxe, a research scientist at JPL, will give a talk entitled "Ozone and Climate Change: Knowns and Unknowns" in Rowland Hall room 390.
Former AirUCI researcher Dr. Najat Saliba, Professor of Chemistry at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, will give a talk entitled “When Urban Dust Mixes with Natural Dust: Chemistry and Size Distribution.” Her lecture will be held in Rowland Hall 390 at noon on Tuesday, August 2, 2011.
AirUCI's seventh annual Teacher Workshop will be held June 27 – July 8, 2011 on the UCI campus.
We are honored that our program has been cited by the National Academy of Sciences as exemplary, and that we've been highlighted in their publication, Strengthening High School Chemistry Education through Teacher Outreach Programs where the vital importance of public school chemistry teachers is discussed.
About the Course
This is an intensive Environmental Chemistry program, geared for science teachers in grades 7-12. We can accept 20 teachers into the class per year. Priority is given to teachers in districts local to UC Irvine and to high school teachers. View the brochure
The course includes morning lectures presented by leading researchers in the field of Atmospheric Chemistry and afternoon environmental analysis projects in our labs. Watch Dr. Laux teach one of our classes
For those with hypersensitivities to chemicals, please note that time is spent in laboratories each day, though we've only had one participant who had an issue with this in all the years we've held the course. View the class website
The class is open to any qualifying teacher, but unfortunately AirUCI cannot provide assistance with lodging or transportation. For teachers outside our area, you might visit Hotel UCI to see if there is housing available on campus, but we cannot make these arrangements.
Attending teachers receive:
- A $1,000 stipend
- University credit through UCI Extension
- Textbook
- Class materials in print and CD format
- Lunch each day
- Free parking
- Pairing with an AirUCI researcher for the school year
For details about the workshop, please contact Professor Sergey Nizkorodov at 949-824-1262 or Melissa Sweet at 949-824-2628.
NOTE: We are now accepting applications for the summer 2012 workshop. We encourage qualified teachers to register at any time as we have a list of applicants forming already.

Please spread the word to your colleagues. We hope you can join us!
Professor James Pankow of Portland State University gave a talk at noon on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 in Rowland Hall room 390. The lecture was entitled, "Probing the Fundamental Chemical Properties of Atmospheric Organic Particulate Matter: Polarity, Mean Molecular Weight, and Equilibration Times".
Dr. Yu Song from the University of California, Riverside will be giving a talk in Rowland Hall room 390 on June 16th at 11.30 am. The title is entitled "Photodissociation dynamics of polyatomic organic radicals".
On April 25, at noon in room RH390, Dr. Hong Xu of the University of California, Davis will give a talk entitled:
“Rovibrationally selected ion-molecule reaction studies using vacuum ultraviolet laser pulsed field ionization-photoion method”
AirUCI is sponsoring a lecture presented by Professor Gil Nathanson of the University of Wisconsin, Madison entitled, “How Does HCl Dissolve? A Molecular Beam Journey into Salty Glycerol and Water.”
This talk will be held Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 4:00 PM in Rowland Hall, Room 390 and is hosted by Vice Chancellor of Research, John Hemminger (AirUCI co-Director).
Prof. Barbara Finlayson-Pitts and Prof. Benny Gerber of AirUCI are hosting a lecture by Prof. John Simons, F.R.S of the Department of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry, Oxford University. This event will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 4:00 PM.
The title of the talk is "Sweetness and Light: Carbohydrate Shapes and Interactions in the Gas Phase".
Dr. Tracy Caldwell Dyson, a former UCI postdoctoral scholar in chemistry (under AirUCI co-directors Barbara Finlayson-Pitts and John Hemminger), recently completed six months on the International Space Station. We're excited that she has agreed to return to UCI to give another public lecture in the Beckman Auditorium to share her experiences!
Here are articles written after the event from the Orange County Register and the Riverside Press Enterprise.
The lecture begins at 7:00 pm, entitled "International Space Station Expedition 23/24: Living Above the World at Mach 25," and the talk will be followed by a reception in the Beckman Atrium.
Tracy gave a similar lecture in October 2007 to overflow crowds and much media coverage. This is a wonderful opportunity for the public, including schoolchildren age 10 and older, to see an astronaut in person and learn first hand about science, space, and what it takes to be an astronaut.
Seating is limited for this event and overflow rooms with streaming live video will be provided. View the event program
