Astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson will give a public presentation at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 18th at the Beckman Auditorium on campus.  A postdoctoral researcher with AirUCI Director Barbara Finlayson-Pitts and co-Director John Hemminger, Dr. Caldwell Dyson was conducting research here when she learned that she had been accepted into the astronaut corps.  She'll be speaking on her experiences aboard the space shuttle Endeavour and the International Space Station.  For more information, contact Melissa Sweet at 949-824-2628.    View the flyer

AirUCI's 10th annual international science workshop will be held at the Surf and Sand Hotel in Laguna Beach, California from January 22 - 23, 2014.  Invited speakers and AirUCI researchers will give presentations on the latest findings in chemistry in the atmosphere and at interfaces.

On Wednesday, December 18th, AirUCI will host a lecture by Dr. Shao-Meng Li of Environment Canada.  His talk, entitled "Heterogeneous uptake of gas phase ammonia and organics on sulfuric acid aerosols: laboratory studies reveal complex chemical processes," will be held in Rowland Hall 390 at 11 am.

On Tuesday, December 17th, AirUCI will host Dr. Theo Kurtin of the University of Helsinki, Finland.  He will give a talk entitled, "What Can Computational Chemistry Tell Us About Atmospheric New-Particle Formation" in Rowland Hall 390 at noon.

On Thursday, December 5th AirUCI will host a special "triumvirate" of European visitors for the day:

  • Christian George of  the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, IRCELYON, CNRS, University Claude Bernard in Lyon, France
  • Hartmut Hermann of the University of Leipzig, Germany and the Leibniz‐Institut for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS)
  • Wahid Mellouki of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, ICARE, CNRS in Orléans, France

These internationally known atmospheric chemists will speak at a lunch discussion at 1:00 pm in Rowland Hall 390 in which they each give a brief summary of current research they are closely following as well as exciting areas of future study.  They will also visit AirUCI labs during the day.

AirUCI PI Robert Phalen is among the organizers of the Sustainable Goods Movement Symposium to be held November 21-22, 2013 in Palm Desert, CA and hosted by the Palm Springs Institute for Environmental Sustainability.  Speakers from various Southern California universities, the Port of Long Beach, AQMD, and private industry will give presentations.  AirUCI researchers are expected to be among the attendees and poster presenters, and scholarship funds to attend are available.  Additional details are available on the symposium site.

Dr. Paul Bagot of Oxford University will present a seminar entitled "Characterization of catalytically-active Pt-alloy surfaces and core-shell nanoparticles using atom probe tomography" on Monday, November 4th at noon in Rowland Hall room 390.

AirUCI PI Michael Kleinman will present a seminar on October 9, 2013 in Sacramento at a California Air Resources Board Research Seminar, entitled "Cardiopulmonary Health Effects of Certain Constituents of Ultra-Fine Particles".  This seminar will be available for viewing by web cast — registration details are shown below — and questions can be submitted by e-mail prior to the event:
