AirUCI Project Scientist Dr. Veronique Perraud regularly holds tutorial sessions that teach AirUCI researchers and others how to use Igor, a technical graphing and data analysis software for scientists. The next tutorial will take place on Wed, August 20 from 3:30-5pm in Rowland Hall Rm 390.
Dr. Christian Pfrang, Professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Birmingham, will be giving a talk at 11am in Rowland Hall Room 390 on August 18. His seminar is entitled "Levitated & Nano-structured Cooking Aerosols, Bees, Peace Lilies & Air Fresheners: a Journey through Outdoor & Indoor Air Pollution Research." In his lecture, Professor Pfrang will cover a range of air pollution research considering reactions of atmospheric gases and particles outdoors and indoors, and their impacts on humans and pollinators.
On August 13th, AirUCI will welcome Dr. Paola Crippa, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Egineering & Earth Sciences at the University of Notre Dame. She will be giving a talk at 11am in Rowland Hall Room 390 entitled "Reducing Sources of Uncertainty of Air Pollution Health Impacts Estimates." Professor Crippa will also be meeting with AirUCI researchers throughout the day.
AirUCI's AAAR Student Chapter has booked a tour of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The tour will be from 9:30 to 12:00 on July 28th. The tour will include JPL's control room, their clean room where they build satellites, and the earth science building.
There is space for 35 participants, and the link to the sign-up form is here: https://forms.gle/EVciZBBnoRShUvSJ8. The guest list needs to be confirmed three weeks prior to the tour, so please fill out the sign-up form by the end of June. Everyone is welcome to join this tour, including undergraduates, postdocs, and professors. If anyone has any questions, please email kappa@uci.edu.
On July 24th AirUCI hosted 10 community college students and 2 staff members from Moreno Valley College's TRIO Academic Counseling and Educational Support (ACES) program. The students toured 4 AirUCI labs, with each lab tour including presentations by AirUCI researchers and hands-on demonstrations. Following the tours, a panel of AirUCI researchers answered questions from the students.
The event was a great success, with one of the Moreno Valley College staff members later commenting, "Thank you for such an amazing time with AirUCI on Thursday! The students and I LOVED it! Such an amazing experience to expose them to research and other education opportunities...Very memorable and moving! Our students connected so well with everyone, especially the students in AirUCI. I'm hopeful we can bring another group of students at a later date to [keep the] momentum going."
AirUCI will be hosting university students from South Korea's Gyeonggi Youth Ladder Program on July 23rd. AirUCI scientists will provide the students with tours of our labs and speak with them about our research projects. The students have a particular interest in environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, and air quality research, and their visit aims to help them clarify their future career paths.
AirUCI Project Scientists Dr. Lisa Wingen and Dr. Veronique Perraud have organized regular meetings for researchers to discuss using the Igor lab apparatus. The next meeting will be held on July 23rd from 3:30-5:00 PM in Rowland Hall room 390.
On July 16th AirUCI hosted 16 middle school students and their 8 chaperones from Moreno Valley College's TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) program. The students each toured 5 AirUCI labs and had the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities. AirUCI researchers also participated in a career panel for the students to help them learn more about career options in science.
AirUCI postdoc,Zhaomin Yang will give a presentation on her recent research from 12-1 pm on Friday, June 27, in Rowland Hall room 390. The topic is NO2, SO2, NH3, and RH effects on SOA formation.
