Event Date: Thu, 11/06/2014 to Fri, 11/07/2014

AirUCI Director Barbara Finlayson-Pitts has been invited to present the prestigeous Walter J. Chute lectures at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.  The Chute public lecture, entitled “Air Pollution, Acid Rain, and Climate Change: Perspectives from the Past and Future Challenges,” will be held on November 6th, 2014.  The Chute research lecture, “Mysteries of Particles in Air: Research Challenges and Why We Should Care,” will take place on November 7th and will be attended by the university's faculty, graduate students, and researchers as well as the scientific community.

AirUCI Director Barbara Finlayson-Pitts has been invited to deliver two lectures at Trent University in Ontario, Canada on November 5, 2014.  The public lecture is entitled "Air Pollution, Acid Rain, and Climate Change: Perspectives from the Past and Future Challenges" while the research colloquium is entitled "The Birth and Growth of Particles in Air: Future Challenges and Why We Should Care."

Event Date: Fri, 10/24/2014 to Sat, 10/25/2014

The Second Aerosol Dosimetry Conference—organized and hosted by AirUCI PIs Robert Phalen, Michael Kleinman, and Ralph Delfino—will be held at the Beckman Center in Irvine, California on October 24 and 25, 2014.  A broad range of topics will be discussed, with abstracts submitted from six nations.  AirUCI researchers will present posters and act as Session Monitors for the event.  For more information visit the conference web site.

Event Date: Tue, 10/07/2014

On October 7, 2014 at 4:00 pm, AirUCI PI Michael Kleinman will host a student webinar event called Program in a Box presented by the American Chemical Society.  The event will be held in Rowland Hall 390 and is geared toward undergrads — the topic is “Communicating your Science”.

AirUCI will host a lecture by Jonathan Slade of State University of New York at Stony Brook on September 16, 2014.  The talk, entitled "Chemical aging of biomass burning organic aerosol by OH: uptake kinetics, products, and dependence on oxidant concentration and particle phase," will be held at 11 am in Rowland Hall 390.

AirUCI will again be hosting a two-day workshop at the Lake Arrowhead Conference Center for our graduate students, postdocs, and project scientists which will be held September 9-11, 2014.  This is an opportunity for our researchers to hear about the studies being conducted in other groups and to form potential research collaborations.  For details, contact Melissa Sweet at 949-824-2628.

Event Date: Thu, 08/07/2014

On Thursday, August 7, AirUCI will sponsor Dr. Judith Lattimer in a lecture hosted by the Hemminger research group.  The talk will begin at 11 am in Rowland Hall 390, entitled "Covalent attachment of metal complexes and molecular catalysts to Si(111) surfaces".

AirUCI will host a lecture by Prof. Chris Cappa of the University of California at Davis on August 5th at noon in Rowland Hall room 390.  The lecture is entitled "Understanding light absorption by black (and brown) carbon through ambient observations and laboratory measurements."

Applications for the AirUCI Summer Teacher Workshop are now closed.

 

The AirUCI Institute held our tenth annual—and final—Summer Teacher Workshop on June 20 – July 2, 2014.   Unfortunately, we are unable to continue offering this course.  200 teachers over 10 years took part in this workshop, each teaching 100-200 and more students in subsequent school years, so we're very proud of the influence this program has had and will continue to have in grades 7-12 education.   ...

On June 10, 2014, AirUCI will sponsor a lecture presented by Dr. Hind Al-Abadleh of Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada.  The talk, entitled "Interfacial and Bulk Spectroscopic Investigations of Chemistry in Model Multicomponent Aerosol Systems: The Complexation and Photodegradation of Catechol to/by Iron(III)," will begin at 11 am in Rowland Hall 390.
