AirUCI faculty Alex Guenther is organizing a Long-term Biosphere/Atmosphere Chemical Flux Workshop on the future of atmospheric chemistry research to be held at the Beckman Center on November 13-14, 2017.  The workshop is hosted by AirUCI and funded by NSF, and the objective is for the scientific community to discuss strategies for developing an international effort to investigate biosphere-atmosphere chemical exchange across key ecosystems and develop innovative observational instruments and approaches that transform the community capabilities for quantifying comprehensive, long-term observations of biosphere-atmosphere chemical exchange.

Registration is required to attend the event and will close on October 23rd.

Sergey Nizkorodov, co-Director of AirUCI, will speak to a delegation from the Université Côte d’Azur (UCA) in France on Thursday, September 7th.  UCI and UCA are strategic partners in the UCA JEDI program with various programmatic collaborations. On this visit, the delegation is seeking opportunities for students in their new interdisciplinary graduate degrees to spend six months at UCI, and Sergey will give a presentation about AirUCI's research projects and opportunities for students interested in environmental and sustainable development issues.  Previous campus visits over the past two years established mutual interest between the universities to collaborate, and AirUCI hopes to build new cooperative research initiatives with UCA.

Event Date: Thursday, September 7, 2017

AirUCI faculty Manabu Shiraiwa is hosting a group of Japanese high school students and their advisors in a week-long event that will introduce them to some of our air pollution research and other projects.  In addition to science topics, they will learn about business, government, education, and general life experiences in Orange County.

Event Date: Monday, August 14, 2017 to Friday, August 18, 2017

AirUCI faculty Manabu Shiraiwa and Doug Tobias will host the kick-off event for the MOdelling Consortium for Chemistry of Indoor Environments (MOCCIE), a new modelling consortium within the Alfred P. Sloan Chemistry of Indoor Environments program.  This two-day event will be held in Rowland Hall room 390 on July 20-21, 2017.  The group will address individual model and research plans, experimental projects, model integration, and synergies and opportunities among other topics.  For additional information, contact Melissa Sweet (949) 824-2628.

Event Date: Thursday, July 20, 2017 to Friday, July 21, 2017

AirUCI faculty Manabu Shiraiwa, along with co-investigator and fellow AirUCI faculty Doug Tobias, will be hosting a launch meeting for their new indoor air quality modeling consortium project funded by the Sloan Foundation.  The two-day event will be held in Rowland Hall room 390.

On May 16, 2017 at 11:00 am, AirUCI faculty Steven Davis will be part of a panel discussion on the question of whether China wlll abide by their climate agreements if the Trump Administration fails to fulfill America's climate pledge.  This event will be held in the LAW building, room 3750 and attendees must register to participate; here is the event information:

UCI's Long-China Institute presents
Can China Save Us from Global Warming?
Under the Trump administration, it is increasingly clear that the U.S. will renege on its commitment to address global climate change and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.  Will China, as the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gas, stay committed to the Paris agreement? Will China play a leading role in combating global climate change? What capabilities does the country have and why would it be motivated to take on more responsibility?
This round table will discuss what China can do in the growing absence of American leadership, featuring three leading specialists from different, relevant focuses on China and the environment.  This talk is open to the public. Register here and view additional information

AirUCI is proud to partner with the American Chemical Society as it dedicates our building, Rowland Hall, as a national science landmark for the work done by F. Sherwood Rowland and Mario Molina in discovering the "ozone hole" over Antarctica, a discovery that won them the Nobel Prize.  The dedication ceremony will be held outside the Rowland Hall lobby on April 18th at 4:00 pm.

In conjunction with this landmark dedication, AirUCI will host a two-day symposium entitled Science and Societal Impacts of Air Quality and Climate Issues:  Past, Present, and Future.  We will broadly discuss climate change, air and water quality issues, and methods for communicating science findings to the public.  The symposium will be held at the Beckman Center April 18-19 and will feature a stellar lineup of speakers, including:

  • Allison Campbell:  President, American Chemical Society / Associate Lab Director, PNNL
  • Jane Hall:  Economist, California State University, Fullerton
  • David Hasemyer:  Pulitzer Prize-winning Investigative journalist, Inside Climate News
  • Wayne Nastri:  Executive Officer, South Coast Air Quality Management District
  • Mary Nichols:  Chair, California Air Resources Board
  • C. Arden Pope:  Professor of Economics, Brigham Young University (health effects researcher)
  • R. Ravishankara:  Professor of Chemistry, Colorado State University
  • Paul Shepson:  Distinguished Professor of Analytical & Atmospheric Chemistry, Purdue University / Division Director, Atmospheric & Geospace Sciences, NSF
  • Ellen Williams:  Distinguished Professor of Physics, University of Maryland / former Director of ARPA-E
